Tree Preservation Orders
Local Authorities are empowered under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act to issue Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). These orders can apply to individual trees, groups of trees, or entire woodlands. The primary aim of a TPO is to safeguard trees from removal or inappropriate pruning that could lead to a significant loss of amenity value.

Applying to Remove or Prune a Protected Tree
Before removing or undertaking any work on protected trees, permission must be obtained from the local authority. This process typically takes up to 8 weeks following the submission of a Formal Application to Carry Out Works to Protected Trees. The application must include an accurate arboricultural description of the proposed work and a map clearly marking the tree's location. All tree work must comply with BS 3998: Tree Work Recommendations.
Unauthorised work on protected trees can result in an unlimited fine and a criminal record.
At Ascent Arboriculture, we can act as your agent to submit the Formal Application on your behalf. Our qualified tree surveyor will provide expert advice on the types of work likely to be approved. With your agreement, we can arrange a site meeting with the local Tree Officer to discuss the proposed works. While we cannot guarantee permission, our expertise and practical approach mean that our applications are often well received.
